If you cough, you expel air from the lungs with a sudden sharp sound.






If you ‘cough up’, it means you give someone money, especially if you don’t want to.


Examples :
Yesterday I had to cough up for a fine because I had forgotten my permission form (135 euros!)
I broke my friend's glasses so I had to cough up 250 euros to buy a new pair.
